Fighting for the Future of the Marvel Universe

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls brings the Marvel universe into the world of competitive fighting games, combining iconic heroes and villains with the distinctive visual style and gameplay philosophy of Arc System Works. The game revolves around four-character teams, allowing players to switch between fighters, use assists and create spectacular combinations. Rather than being a traditional one-on-one fighter, Marvel Tokon puts team building and character synergy at the center of its combat system. The result is a fast, flashy and highly technical fighting game that aims to combine the accessibility of Marvel with the depth that fans of Arc System Works have come to expect.

Five Teams, Five Stories

The 20-character roster is divided into five teams, each with its own story and reason for coming together. The Fighting Avengers unite Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Panther to defend Earth against the threat at the heart of the tournament. The Unbreakable X-Men are assembled by Storm, following Charles Xavier’s guidance, to protect the planet from the mysterious danger approaching Earth. The Knights of Doom bring together Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin and Carnage, creating an alliance between some of Marvel’s most dangerous villains. The Samurai Outriders combine Ghost Rider, Blade, Loki and Deadpool, an unlikely group whose very personalities make their alliance particularly entertaining. Finally, the Amazing Guardians bring together Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord and Peni Parker, a younger and more unconventional team brought together by the Promoter’s mysterious tournament. Each team therefore has more than just a visual identity: the game gives players a reason for these unlikely alliances before letting them create their own combinations..

A Game Built Around Different Ways to Play

Marvel Tokon is designed to offer several ways for players to enjoy its combat system. The team-based format gives casual players plenty of freedom to experiment with their favorite Marvel characters, while more experienced fighting-game players can focus on assists, team synergy, combos and advanced mechanics. Different modes allow players to learn the roster, practice their techniques and compete against other players. This variety is particularly important because the game’s four-character structure means that mastering a character is only part of the challenge: understanding how that character works together with the other members of the team can completely change the way a match is approached.

Deadpool: A Love Letter to Fighting Games

Deadpool may be one of the most entertaining characters in Marvel Tokon because his entire moveset appears to be built around references to other fighting games. Almost every move, animation or interaction feels like a deliberate homage to the genre itself. His attacks can evoke iconic mechanics, characters and animations from classic fighting games, while his exaggerated movements and fourth-wall-breaking personality make it feel as if Wade Wilson knows exactly what kind of game he is in. Rather than simply translating Deadpool’s comic-book abilities into fighting-game mechanics, the developers use him to celebrate the history of the genre. His katanas, guns, teleportation and regeneration are all there, but they are constantly filtered through references and jokes that fighting-game fans can recognize. In that sense, playing Deadpool feels almost like playing a playable collection of fighting-game Easter eggs.

A New Era for Marvel Fighting Games

Marvel Tokon has the opportunity to establish a unique identity within Marvel’s long history of fighting games. Instead of simply attempting to recreate previous Marvel fighters, it combines the publisher’s enormous character roster with Arc System Works’ expertise in fast-paced, visually spectacular competitive games. The result is a game where the characters themselves are only part of the appeal: team composition, references, animations and fighting-game mechanics all contribute to the experience. If the game receives strong post-launch support and continues expanding its roster, Marvel Tokon could become a major new entry in both the Marvel gaming universe and the fighting-game genre.
