It took more than 25 years to see a second animated film of Mortal Kombat, but finally Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge is here! After the videogame storyline reboot in 2011, the success of Mortal Kombat is increasing with every new title, so it is understandable to see the saga expanding in other media and returning to the former glory.
As the title spoilers, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge tells Hanzo Hasashi’s origin and his transformation in Scorpion, but there is more. The movie is about the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, in this way all the original characters of the game are joining the Scorpion’s story.
Scorpion’s story is very well known, and revive it once again maybe for some fans it is not so excited. But that being said, the animation style and the fighting scenes are really violent and bloody as the fight that we are accustomed to play. Krushing Blows, X-Rays, Fatalities and Brutalities pay homage to the videogame and really deserve to be watched.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge is not all about Scorpion. The legendary heroes of the Earthrealm are the co-protagonists of the story of the first Mortal Kombat game. So, I am sorry Johnny, but you have to share the stage with other stars this time! And in fact next to Johnny Cage, Raiden, Liu Kang and Sonya Blade, a lot of characters makes their appearance in the tournament: Jax Briggs, Kitana, Baraka, Reptile, Kano, and obviously Shang Tsung and Goro.
The fighting style of every character is identical to the game. This animated film feats plenty of famous signature moves and Easter eggs winking at the old fans of the saga. The result is just brutal have a look:
Watching the movie I had the feeling that this transposition is only the first of many other animated movies. That something bigger is on the way… Mortal Kombat 11 is the biggest experience of the videogames saga and recent updates will continue the canonical story. A live action reboot movie will be released in January 2021, including actors such as Joe Taslim in the role of Sub-Zero and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. The franchise of Mortal Kombat is not going to stop, so get over here and enjoy the show!
