The Wu Assassin is back with a Fistful of Vengeance. Now, the fans of the Wu Assassin series have their own movie on Netflix. Let’s talk about the curious artistic change of direction.
Wu Assassin’s Legacy
In 2019, when Wu Assassins launched on Netflix, there was a pleasant surprise: finally a tv series with protagonist one of the world best martial artist of the cinematic industry, Iko Uways. And yes, even with some problems, Wu Assassins was really worthy to be watched. In my old post, I was really disappointed about the controversial choices of the film director about the magic scenes… These few elements were able to not letting shine as deserved the talented cast, full of great martial artists like Juju Chan (Jiu Jitsu), Lewis Than (Mortal Kombat) and of course the silat champion Iko Uways. Well, the movie of Roel Reiné made me forget about them, and not in a positive way…
Good Resolutions
Wu Assassins was a good series as mentioned before, that deserved to continue and be deepened. Most of the fans were expecting a second season, instead it was announced a movie. The change of direction was curious, but not necessarily bad, seeing that almost all the cast was joining the project. Watching Fistful of Vengeance however, I had the sadly confirmation that the series turned into something unpleasant.
A Fistful of Disasters
I am trying always to write with knowledge of the facts, because I know the amount of hard work for all the team to deliver a feature film, but I cannot hold myself to say that Fistful of Vengeance is a really bad movie. They took all negative aspects of the tv series and they manage to amplify them in original ways, adding other disturbing elements to the movie. Here some of them:
- If seeing the old faces of the series was great, not seeing two of the main characters was a pity: CG and Jenny, respectively played by Katheryn Winnick and Li Jun Li are not in the movie. And even good actors like Pearl Thusi and Francesca Corney seems able to fill that gap…
- The martial arts scenes have a lot of new problems and give the impression to be even more unrealistic. In particular the sudden change of scenes break the natural sequence of the movements.
- The continues music’s overhangs are too much and do not increase the pace of the action, instead it is distracting the vision during the entire movie.
- The dialogues are really disappointing, showing the worst side of all the cast for the movie long and sometimes make no sense at all. Unnecessary cursing and unjustified change of humor are just few examples…
How can these incredible martial artists could save this movie?
Is this the end?
Again, I don’t like to deliver bad reviews, but I sadly admit that the enormous effort spent to realise Wu Assassins was nullifying by Fistful of Vengeance. Maybe I exaggerating, but I don’t think that a second season could happen sooner or later, despite the story of the movie is set in Bangkok and it is pretty separate from the events of the tv series. I am sorry Iko, I will wait the next movie!
