Super Mario is 35 years old, or at least this Sunday… And I find a way to celebrate the Nintendo icon even here in this martial art blog, how? Introducing the web series Mario Warfare, a live action fighting parody of the world of Super Mario.
A very famous plumber
The world greatest plumber Mario does not need introduction, his videogames as well as being very beloved are the third bestselling game series ever. The games of Super Mario are part of the Mario franchise, which includes other Mario or other Mario cast members videogames, films, table games, cartoons, comics, and much more. In 35 years the adventures of Mario and his participation of crossover titles are countless, so it is not a surprise to see him in a dedicated fan series too.
Beat Down Boogie
Mario Warfare is a web series of Beat Down Boogie, a youtube channel of talented fighting performers and passionate gamers, that pay tribute to pop culture icons, shooting revisited and fun web series.
Mario Warfare
Beat Down Boogie most successful revisited series is indeed Mario Warfare. The story is pretty the same like the very first Super Mario Bros game: Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers have to rescue the kidnapped Princess Peach from the antagonist Bowser, in order to restore the peace in the Mushroom Kingdom. Obviously the action style in here is pretty different from the vintage game, and that is exactly the funniest part. Have a look:
Every character is very well represented and defined by a fighting style accurately studied. One of the most surprising action scenes was the tribute to Super Smash Bros, a crossover brawler game between the icons of the videogame industry. In Mario Warfare the Super Smash Bros is a parody of the movie Fight Club, check this out:
Another very surprising moment was to meet Donkey Kong in the series. The gorilla first representation in games was indeed with Mario (called Jumpman at that time) in the homonymous Donkey Kong game of the 1981. Since then DK became the protagonist of his own franchise, but still continuously join Mario games.
In my opinion, the very best combat of the series is the fight between Mario (Matthew Sumner) and Waluigi (Eric Jacubus). In this elaborated fighting sequence you will really enjoy the martial art skills of the movie actors:
Power up the birthday party
The war environment thought for this web series is really original and the fighting scenes are so well done that it really deserves to be watched by the admirer of the action genre. Mario Warfare is also very funny, the transposition of the characters takes inspiration from their true personality: Mario is brave and impulsive, Luigi is bumbling and cowardly, Princess Peach is selfless and perky, and so on. The cast of Beat Down Boogie is really passionate about cosplaying, and in the Mario Warfare series the character costumes are really original and pertinent to the action genre. Super Mario is 35 years old and for this special occasion, watching this web series is really appropriate. You can find the complete saga here.
Happy birthday Bro!
