Johnny Cage is certainly an icon not only in the Mortal Kombat franchise, but he was able to make all the fans of the fighting videogame fall in love with him. In 1992, the action star was inspired by Jean-Claude Van Damme for the original Mortal Kombat game. Johnny Cage could be seen as the exaggeration of Van Damme, both for his fighting style and for his personality, and in the broader sense, a parody of all the martial art movie stars.
The true celebrity
The Jean-Claude Van Damme’s unique fighting style is quite rare to find in video games, in fact, to my knowledge I can share with you only the series Shaolin vs Wutang, where the resemblance is impressive and deservers to be deepened in a new article… The game par excellence that tributes Van Damme however remains Mortal Kombat and finally, with MK1, we can play Johnny Cage with Van Damme skin ones for all!
A tribute movie
On top of that we have a new movie, or better a new animated movie of the series MK legends, all based on Johnny Cage humor and set in the 80’s. Even if the movie is the weakest of the entire series until now, in terms of fighting scenes, seeing Johnny Cage in is natural habitat is funny and after all, a good diversion from the rivers of blood of the other MK movies and videogames. Don’t get me wrong, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match is still a MK animated movie, so you will see violence, but the cocky mood and the tons of pop culture reference will make you forget sometimes that you are watching one of the bloodiest concept ever released.
