Are you ready for some Kunio action? This Summer Kunio-kun is not step aside and he is ready to join the beat ’em up wave with two new titles! Let’s jump into this brawl one more time.

The origin

The Kunio-kun series is not only the grandfather of the beat ’em up genre, but also one of the most beloved videogame series in Japan. The world of high school brawls created by Yoshihisa Kishimoto in 1986 is in reality a semi-autobiographical game. Kishimoto experienced fights on regularly basis in his high school years and combining them with his passion for martial art movies and computers, gave birth to Kunio-kun.

The Kunio-kun series counts at the moment more than fifty videogames in less than forty years, the Japanese video game developer Arc System Works handle now the rights of the series, once of Technos. Kunio-kun games focus on fights and explore spin-off stories of the River City characters. Relatively soon however, the series was particularly successful integrating sports like soccer, dodgeball and many others.

Last releases for the moment

The last Kunio-kun release for now is called River City Saga: Three Kingdoms, a Kunio-kun series tribute to the masterpiece of the 14th century Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Already released in Japan the past year, it is coming to the West this Summer.

Another big title that will eventually release this Summer is River City Girls 2, the second chapter of the Kunio-kun title with protagonists Kyoko and Misako, girlfriends respectively of Riki and Kunio. Already at their third title, the girls of River City will fight again their enemies.
