TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is finally here. Leonardo, Raphael, Donnie and Mickey stay again head of the curve with this brand new title that the old fans will fall in love with. Ready to fight some foot soldiers and take a walk above and below New York City? Let’s go then!
One for all, all for one
The new beat ‘em up wave is really on fire like noticed in Ringo Ishikawa and all his “indie” friends article. This time I have the honor to write about a long-awaited game, designed by and for the old fans of TMNT. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is all what an old boy grew up in the 80’s/90’s was dreaming of, a little old school masterpiece to add to your personal beat ’em up collection. Playing the game you will notice that this new Ninja Turtles title is in every way a tribute to the past legendary game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
Party dudes
The game development studio behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge Tribute Games, manage to deliver to the audience the ultimate TMNT beat ‘em up, with the possibility to share the joy and play the game for a total of six players locally and online any time during the arcade or the story (the only two gameplay option). This mechanic is in line with the TMNT concept of family and friendship, contributing the relationship with other players between the 16 levels of the game.
I love being a Turtle
For the first time ever, players have the chance not only to play as one of the four ninja turtles, but like Master Splinter, April O’Neil and Casey Jones also! Every character is really well balanced and represent perfectly his own spirit, with their pros and cons. Mickey for example is lighter than the others, Donnie has a wide attack range with his Bo staff, Raphael fights really strong and Leo is well balanced. You will definitely feel what character you are using by his weapon, even if the combos follow the same style, there will be a huge difference between fighting with Sai or Nunchuks.
The care and the attention to the details is extreme and it is everywhere. From the characters, literally come out from the 1987 animated TV series, to the soundtrack, created in order to summon the old school vibes of the cartoon and the movies of the late ‘80s early ‘90s. The developers manage even to include the original voice actors of the 1987 TMNT cartoon, reprising their roles!
Cowabunga!
In the end it is difficult to do not compare Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge with its predecessors of the same genre or with others beat ‘em up of the new wave like Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game and Street of Rage 4. The result is simply a masterpiece, another very good game that tributes is own roots bringing a new fresh chapter, with this childish and funny spirit, who everyone, once in while is looking for.
For the greediest fans of the Turtles, I hope that it will release a dlc for this last game, in any case do not miss the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, with the oldest thirteen TMNT titles.
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is finally here. What’s your favorite turtles and what character would you like to add for a hypothetical dlc?
