They are young, muscular, 15 meters tall, very angry and… they know how to fight! I am talking about the titans of Attack on Titan.
The fans of the manga or the anime created by Hajime Isayama know well that the above description matches only with certain titans. Or better, this properties match only for certain… humans! Yes, in the saga is known as the “Power of the Titans”, which means that some humans have the ability to transform into titans, retaining their consciousness. This intelligent titan form is far more powerful than a regular one, and as if that was not enough, the transformation adds a unique feature like an armor (in the case of the Armored Titan) or an out sized high (in the case of the Colossal Titan), etc.
What the fans maybe do not know is a simple fact: the intelligent titans actually use really fight systems and combat strategies.
Annie the Thai boxer
Annie Leonhart is capable to transform into the Female Titan, a very athletic, powerful and fast creature. The fight style of Annie is predicted by her defensive posture: hands straight with the tops above, forearms pointing towards opponent with elbows pointed out slightly, hips facing forward. All that is the basic Muay Thai stance. Sweeping, elbowing and kneeing are then the basic striking moves of Annie. Although, she proves knowledge of many Brazilian jujitsu techniques as well.
Reiner the brawler
All the strength and the power of the Armored Titan is showed by Reiner. This transformation is clearly more imposing than the one of Eren or Annie. His fists are pure destruction and the only move to rely on. His muscles are pure iron.
Eren the MMA fighter
The title of MMA fighter goes to Eren, because of his kick boxing style mixed with the grappling techniques of Annie. Eren control the Attack Titan, a very aggressive and unstable creature. It took time, but in the end Eren could finally focus his anger in something constructive. Controlling his titan form, Eren proves to adapt to a lot of different situations, becoming the more dangerous fighter of the anime.
In conclusion, with these fight sequences, Attack on Titan demonstrating once more the deepen and the attention to small details that good anime are used to show. Besides, it is not a coincidence that it is considered one of the most influential anime of the last decade.
